THE GOOD SAMARITAN!
THE
GOOD SAMARITAN!
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down
from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his clothes,
and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
And by chance there came down a
certain Priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and
passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came
where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him,
and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast,
and brought him to an Inn, and took care of him.
And on the morrow when he departed,
he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care
of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay
thee.
Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was
neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed
mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Whether it was by accident or coincidence,
Jesus told the story of this amazing and caring Good Samaritan: the moral side
of the story remains unchanged! The most important part of this narrative is that
the victim himself was a Jew.
It is worth noting under the same breath; that the
men who beat this man and left him for death: were themselves, Jewish thugs.
For years the racial rift between the
Jews and the Samaritans existed unabated. Both the Jews and the Samaritans
claimed the Legacy of Father Abraham and Jacob, as their own and exclusive story:
just like the same situation between the Israelis and the Palestinians today! A conundrum of
racial supremacy and the paradox of segregation.
The Good Samaritan according to Jesus, equates the
law of neighbourliness between natural enemies, who were victims of the racial
vitriol supplanted by previous generations. It’s hard and almost impossible for
any generation to uproot, until someone asks the Question: Why?
Jesus told this story after He was
provoked by the over-zealous lawyer of the Law of Moses. This religious bigot thought
he could publicly humiliate the Son of God using the same Law God dictated to
Moses; in the very first place!
Who is my neighbour? The man asked from the
wickedness of his heart.
Go and do the same thing by following
the moral example of the Good Samaritan. Do what the Priest and the Levite would
not do: caring and showing mercy to a fellow Jewish victim, robbed and almost
killed by Jewish thugs!
The story and final emphasis of Jesus: rubbed salt
to the already wounded ego of the Religious Leaders: who thought they had
exclusive rights to God the Almighty!
Painting the hated Samaritan as good
and morally better than the respected Religious Leaders, provoked anger and
disdain and resentment towards Jesus. This Jesus, who does He think He is? Is
He even a Jew after all?
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them
that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which
despitefully use you, and persecute you. I have said this, a million times
over: your enemies are not necessarily the enemies of God!
You will never grow in His Grace till
you learn to draw a line between God and men! This Good Samaritan did exactly
what Jesus came to teach in the New Testament Age. Jesus expounded and gave True
Meaning and Precise Interpretation of the Law of Moses!
Love thy neighbour as you love yourself and pray for
your enemies! There’s a Good Samaritan in each and everyone of us: only if we
let the Spirit take control and guide us to act as God's Agents in executing
Random Acts of Kindness; even for total strangers and our very animated enemies!
The Good Samaritan didn’t see his
Jewish nemesis as his enemy and at worst; a good chance for him to avenge all
the racial segregation he’d suffered at the hands of his Jewish neighbours. His
compassion for fellow man was stronger than all the painful years of being
treated as sub-human by the Jews.
God counts all the good you do for others as
righteousness and records it in the Book of His Remembrance. Be the Good
Samaritan and keep walking with God!
